Jul 30, 2010 - Sands Sky Park

After the long days of walking the streets of Orchard ‘parade’ and jet lagged, it finally catches up with us and we oversleep, the breakfast we were so looking for, we miss, and find ourselves still in bed, 11:10am!! Singapore Rain – a calm drizzle and still hot enough to hit the road to fill our starving stomachs. ... Next stop – our first try on Singapore’s subway system – the MRT – all co-ordinated, each station numbered and coloured – hop on the red and take the yellow, off to Marine Bay, off at Dorby Gaut interchange and onto Circle Line to Promenande, a five minute walk and there it is the stunning sky scraper, one of the latest built Sands Sky Park, a magnificent structure. ...

Jul 29, 2010 - Singapore Sling

Our main observations on Singapore are 1) It is THE cleanest city in the whole wide world. ... 4) We couldn’t really afford to do it on our backpacker budget!! Singapore was really just a 48 hour stopover for us and quite frankly we couldn’t really have afforded to stay longer! We did manage to do plenty of the tourist sites though , such as a few temples, the quayside, Little India, the Arab quarter and Chinatown. ... All great recommendations from Rachel – thank you! I personally really quite liked Singapore but not as much as if I had been allowed a Singapore sling in Raffles hotel! (Note from JB: Alas, if only we were on the set of Sex and the City instead of backpacking around the third world on a budget. ...

Jul 22, 2010 - Singapore - Part 2

Funny to hear that when they go on holiday they want to get as far away as possible from Germans! This afternoon I headed over to Clarke Quay for a wander and get caught up in a bit of retail therapy at one of the many shopping centres in Singapore called The Central, only to get out of the rain you understand :-) It stops raining and I decide to take a river taxi and take in some of the sights - the 5-star Fullerton Hotel, the Marina Bay, the Singapore Flyer (the world's biggest observation wheel), the impressive Singapore Casino Hotel with its rooftop casino and palm trees and a vast array of bars and restaurants along the Clarke Quay. ... you get the picture! :-) Singapore is certainly the place to visit for fine food and shopping! :-) Rather conveniently for me :-), there is also the Singapore Food Festival on just now where you can discover the treasures of Singapore Chinese Dialect food at Clarke Quay Food Street. ... A real treat! As it turns out, it is also a treat for a young Singaporean couple I meet at a stand-up table to enjoy my noodles, who never knew this place existed until today when they happened to walk past it :-) Agreed, I have not seen much of Singapore, but what I have seen is great. ...

July 1, 2010 Marianne: We have left hot and humid Singapore, and are now high above the clouds over Thailand, having landed in Bangkok, and 5 hours later, boarded another plane for Chang Mai, in the north, because we were scared of the now apparently ended political unrest. ... Steve: Before Singapore, we ended our stay in Australia with more of a whimper than a bang. ... Marianne: Singapore was a lot of fun, though really hot and humid. ... Steve: Much of Singapore is like a giant shopping mall, some with fancy brand-names, and some very "ethnic," like the building we visited in "Little India," which featured acres (hectares) of displays of Indian dresses, as well as more mundane things like watches and cosmetics – seemingly more watches and cosmetics than all the inhabitants of Singapore could buy in a lifetime. ...
