My flight to Auckland set off on Sunday and it was a 13 hour flight. ... Auckland is not dissimilar to a lot of first world big cities that I have been to, but it is in a great location with a picturesque harbour and harbour bridge and it has beautiful lakes and beaches just ten minutes from the centre. ... I'd met a girl from Auckland whilst I was in Peru so I cancelled the very touristy bus orientation tour that I had booked myself on and was given a guided tour of the city by a local. ... Before leaving Auckland I heeded the advice of a number of people and got my haircut. ...

We had a very comical air steward who was making comments about the “snacks “on offer during the short flight- just to see if anyone was listening i think but he was entertaining! Arrived safely in Auckland & bit of a culture shock as more than 2 lanes of traffic for a start! Anyway collected a car & headed off to check out Motorhome hire. ... There must be a lot of people with an awful lot of money to spend on holidays! Now having done this research it is rush hour in Auckland – YUCK so we have to find a way through it. ... Took a lot longer than we thought & Auckland seems to go on forever so we just start trying to find a motel. ...

February 23, 2010 We got up and had breakfast at the hotel in Samoa this morning trying a couple of new and interesting (and un-pronunciable) fruits. Auckland had been good for food, that’s for sure! We ordered another beer and we were met by the people sharing our dorm room – Alison from California and Matt from Venice. ... It was a really fun evening and a good end to our time in Auckland. ...

February 16, 2010 Our first full day in Auckland and we started with a bit of culture and the Auckland Museum. ... Auckland is a nice, laid back city and although we’ve not been here long we both like it. ... I can’t think of many places where we would do that anywhere in the world and that says a lot about Auckland for me. ... We had decided to go for a swim this morning and we visited the Auckland Tepid Baths. ...

Well, I was on call today, and a busy day it was too, with Claire, one of our nurses going home, and us all saying goodbye to the longest in-patient at sea ever I suspect! Our patient who had been with us in the medical centre for 10 days was finally disembarked to hospital in Auckland. ... I think he was sorry to leave us in the end, and we were a little sad to see him go - if not a bit relieved, as we are all so tired!!! Anyway, the day ended well with a barbeque on the crew deck by the wardroom, as we sailed our of Auckland haarbour. ... Monday 15th February Day 37 At 9am our time we have travelled 908 miles from Apia and last night, midnight we crossed the Tropic of Capricorn. We are looking forward to Wednesday when we arrive in Auckland, New Zealand, our friends Hugh & Rosemary from Pocklington will be meeting us and whisking us off for the day returning us to the ship at night ready for the sail away. ... Hugh & Rosemary have their own place here in Auckland and they visit their son Tony , wife Caroline and their four lovely grandchildren, every year for around four months, (probably to enjoy the New Zealand summer & escape the English winter) Tony & his wife run a very successful restaurant in Auckland so we are looking forward to meeting them. ... The weather has been brilliant today, and the ocean is like a mill-pond, evidently it is usually like this, we have just been unfortunate, but we are not complaining, how on earth could we! Whilst we were sitting in the sun, Bill spotted about 70 pilot whales enjoying the calm waters, as David Sanders (the expert) was standing close by, he checked Bills photographs and told us what they were – a lovely sight, but along way off.Monday 15th February Day 37 At 9am our time we have travelled 908 miles from Apia and last night, midnight we crossed the Tropic of Capricorn.
