Jul 3, 2010 - Tiger Leaping Gorge
Today was the last day in Lijiang and we saved the best for last as we thought. ... The road was a little scary to drive on because it wasn’t very wide and it was also very bumpy because I’m sure they don’t have a degree for road making in Lijiang. ... After 2 hours of driving we finally made it to the entrance of the gorge and then had to walk 3km or 2mi to the Tiger Leaping Rock which is mainly how it got its name because Chinese story’s say that the river was small enough at this point for a tiger to jump on the rock and make it to the other side of the river.Today was the last day in Lijiang and we saved the best for last as we thought. ... Well we had to get up earlier to meet with our tour guide and his name was Anthony he was wearing an Argentina hat which wasn't a good impression but the good thing was that he knew good English and knew allot about all the small cities around Lijiang. ... We went back to the old town and walked by the bar street stopped by a small and quiet place then Anthony showed us around the old town and showed us some nice places to eat and took us up to the top of the town that gave us a nice view of all of Lijiang. ... We finally made it to Lijiang in Yunnan after a mammoth train journey starting at 6 in the evening from Chengdu with a twelve hour overnight hard seat train to Pan Zhi Hua. ... After this we got straight on a bus to Lijiang which took another ten hours. ... A combination of dynamite induced landslides, pouring rain, lazy ferry people, luck, and seven friends made tiger leap the most eventful leg of my trip thus far. Our way out was to go to a remote village to catch the 1:30pm bus back to Lijiang. ... I stay at “Mama Naxi’s” guesthouse here in Lijiang. ... When I arrived yesterday, I had problems finding the place since it is situated in the “Old Town” of Lijiang. ... The “Old Town” is basically an area of Lijiang where the antique buildings are kept in good condition in the interest of fostering tourism (and you can tell that it works out, since 12% of the annual tourist traffic of Yunnan happens in the “Old Town” of Lijiang). ... She guided us to Lijiang’s biggest market, where we tried some local food and to another old town that all in all was pretty similar to the “Old Town” as described above. ...

MS and I were joining another tour starting in Kunming – the main purpose of this tour was to hike Tiger Leaping Gorge. First stop on the tour was Lijiang which was a nine hour bus ride from Kunming. ... We arrived in Lijiang in time for a quick walk around the Old Town which was where our guest house was located. ... Whats up you'll Here are some pictures from the yunnan province. I went to some glaciers outside lijiang and it was hilarious the chinese treated it like everest, they rented these big jackets and all bought bottled oxygen, they are pretty goofy. ... Right now I'm in Shangri-la and it is the start of the tibetian culture in western china, I've been drinking yak butter tea and yogurht all week.Whats up you'll Here are some pictures from the yunnan province. 03/05/09 - 05/05/09 Bus ride back to Lijiang was painless. ... we asked a few of the Chinese back in Lijiang why he would have done that but no one knew. ... ?????? The rest of our time in Lijiang was catch up time. ... Our visits to Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Tiger Leaping were wonderful. ...
