Headed to China!

Sep 30, 2009 - Day 11: Chengdu - Leshan - Chengdu

The Giant Buddha (Da Fo) awaited us on our day trip to Leshan, and he certainly was big!! I'd seen lots of pictures of him before, but seeing him in real life was amazing - his hands and feet were incredible, and I couldn't stop looking at how huge his fingernails and toenails were - about the size of a person! Construction on this amazing sculpture began in 713AD, by a Buddhist monk called Haitong, and took 90 years for it to be completed. ... The Buddha statue is located in a huge park, so we then spent a couple of hours exploring the rest of the places - a little cave where the monk lived, lots of beautiful pagodas and teahouses, walked through a bush/rainforest area, looked in a couple of temples and in the burial caves, photographed a gorgeous bridge over one of the rivers, walked through an interesting fisherman's village and climbed lots of steps!! We got back from Leshan fairly late, so it was pretty much time for dinner. ... A group of us (the four Canadians, two other Australians Joanne and Adelene, and I) decided to go and find Jing Li Street, an area famed for outdoor night food stalls. The Giant Buddha (Da Fo) awaited us on our day trip to Leshan, and he certainly was big!! Dec 24, 2008 - Leshan - Christmas Eve Mishaps

by Chris I thought it would be fun to share with everyone the comical misadventures that made up our December 24th: We had originally planned to go to Leshan on the 23rd, but we decided to rest up that day, as Lora had been sick (flu-like) the day before. ... So we decided to spend Christmas Eve day traveling to Leshan to see the world's largest Buddha, and we thought we should be back to our hostel in time for the Christmas Eve party, complete with glutinous rice balls - it seemed as good a way as any to spend Christmas Eve here in Chengdu, China. ... Before I go into the mis-adventures, let me tell you about the Leshan buddha. ... Check out the photos - it does look pretty amazing! The hostel where we were staying in Chengdu did not offer a day-trip tour to Leshan that really suited our needs. ... So having been successful so far in China, despite the most challenging language barrier of our trip, we decided to take a public bus to Leshan and tour the buddha on our own. ...

Sep 29, 2005 - Leshan

Got up again at 5am, stupid time, something I will not miss when we get off the backdoor route to Chengdu. Got on the bus and we departed for Leshan at about 6am although once we had arsed about trying to pick up this one student for an hour or so it was 9am, even turned round and drove back to Kangding 2 times ruddy farce. ... Got to Leshan and booked ourselves into this posh hotel for the night, as we deserved it after some heavy traveling and crap hotels during the week, we even had a tele and our own bathroom! We then hit the grub trail and found dome sorted old girl who dished up some sweet, Chilli pork, twice cooked pork and sweet and sour Eggplant, she even started dumping loads of free dishes on the table, I was loving it. ... Must mention Sichuan food is lush they love the chilli, which is all good for me.Got up again at 5am, stupid time, something I will not miss when we get off the backdoor route to Chengdu.
