We travelled in style from Shanghai to Xi'an, which was a nice introduction to overnight trains. We hired bikes and cycled around the city walls of Xian which was very tiring but fun and meant we got to see the whole of the city straight away. ... After the tiring cycle we decided to visit the Bell Tower and Drum Tower which were used in old times to tell the time.We travelled in style from Shanghai to Xi'an, which was a nice introduction to overnight trains. Xian, China: City Walls & Big Goose Pagoda ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 19 June 2010 Time is no longer permitting me to write in much detail for all posts so I am uploading photos with a short summary which I will update on my return. ... Jun 18, 2010 - Exploring History in Xian
Today we leave for Beijing but we have many hours to kill, I am glad that we did. Add to that the importance of also being home of the first Budhist temple and the location of the start of the silk road and the site of the oldest settlement in China (6000 yrs old): it all adds up to Xian being a very important historical point in the world, but we didn't know any of this until we visited here (other than it being the start of the silk road - which we learnt in Istanbol - the other end of the silk road. ... ) These days are filled with thoughts of the trip, what we saw, what we missed, what we wish to see again, which experiences we want and which we wish to forget.Today we leave for Beijing but we have many hours to kill, I am glad that we did.
