Aug 7, 2010 - Macau

Today I left Hong Kong and paid a visit to the second of China's Special Administrative Regions - Macau. ... Macau was handed back to China in 1999 by Portugal and benefits from the 'one country, two systems' approach. ... Unlike China gambling is legal and therefore part of Macau resembles Las Vegas and is full of huge casinos. ... I went with a couple of Japanese girls from my dorm (who's names I can't now remember) and we got a taxi tour round the city which took in various sights including a lighthouse, church, temple, skytower (which has the highest bungy jump in the world) and part of the journey was on the route taken for the Macau Grand Prix. ...

Monday The ferry trip from Hong Kong to Macau took just over 75 minutes, and on arrival we caught the complimentary coach from Macau Ferry Terminal to the City Of Dreams. ... jsp" target="_blank">Grand Hyatt Macau, and requested an upgrade to the Grand Club, in order to get complimentary breakfast, pre dinner drinks & canapes again. ... Weirdly, the upgrade fee for the Grand Hyatt Macau was much less than the upgrade fee for the Hyatt Regency Tsim Sha Tsui, but then the difference is Macau is less of a business hotel (definitely a conference or exhibition venue), whilst Hong Kong seemed full of business people. ... A review mentioned that in one of the standard rooms, you could comfortably sleep 4 asians, I think in our bathroom you could have comfortably slept 4 asian families!!! We now understand why JT (Assistant HK manager at Hyatt Coolum who went to assist HK for a month in Macau when the hotel opened) didn’t really enjoy her time in Macau - the rooms are huge and would have been a lot of work to clean them!! We decided to go for a wander after checking in, to kill some time before dinner started… and yes, that means pre-dinner drinks and canapes. ... We enjoyed some local Macau beer, which was really nice, before moving on to the Vodka’s. ...

Macau is an island about an hour ferry ride from Hong Kong. ... Macau, like Hong Kong, was given a "grace period" of 50 years when it was handed over to the Chinese, to operate relatively independently. ... So you have to go through immigration upon arrive in Macau and again when you re-enter Hong Kong. ... For better or worse, Macau and the adjacent island of Taipa are fast becoming the “Las Vegas of the East”. ... Everything you see in Las Vegas is going to be even bigger and better in Macau and Taipa! Although you can arrange a tour of Macau and Taipa when you arrive at the ferry terminal, we decided to take one of the many complimentary hotel buses to the beautiful MGM hotel and try to arrange a private tour from there where the staff was exceptionally helpful in doing so. ...

Oct 22, 2009 - Macau: For my Dad. :)

So two weekends ago, Mal and I traveled to Macau. ... Mal only has a thirty day visitor's visa so every month she has to leave the mainland and go to either Macau or Hong Kong, so that weekend we decided to go and check out the sites at Macau. ... Macau is the gambling epicenter of Asia, and it is more importantly a Western oasis away from most of what is China. ... So we took the hour bus ride to the border between Macau and Mainland, and then we had to go through customs and finally we made it to Macau. ... So a quick background on what exactly Macau is. ...

Oct 12, 2009 - Macau - Oct 11-12

October 11 Having spent a couple of days in HK, we headed this morning to the ferry terminal and “hopped” across to Macau, clearing HK immigration on side and then an hour later getting another stamp for Macau. ... Just a bloody annoyance but at least neither HK or Macau charge US or UK visitors to get in! At the ferry terminal, we caught the free courtesy bus into the City of Dreams hotel complex on the Cotai Strip, supposedly Macau’s version of Vegas. ... Of course, the lights and music and effects were much better here which made it a good show to watch and a good change of scenery compared to more museums! From there, we jumped in a taxi and headed to a restaurant called Litoral, which served typical Macau food. ... I had pork in a Macaunese sauce and it was lovely, despite the service. ... She claimed she was “risk averse” and my response of it only being 30 bloody dollars probably seemed a little argumentative! (I actually only lost about $12 as we left before I lost the rest!) October 12 As a treat, and as we were splashing out a little being in Macau, we treated ourselves to massages. ...

Jun 13, 2008 - Macau: China, Portugal or Vegas?

We took an overnight bus from Yangshou to Zuhai in order to cross into Macau (or as the Chinese Government calls it - the Special Administrative Zone of Macau). ... The border crossing from Zuhai into Macau is very easy, but hectic. ... There is an exit area from The People’s Republic of China, followed by “no-man’s land” and then an entry area into Macau. ... Macau has different money than The People’s Republic of China (Macau uses the Pacata as well as the Hong Kong Dollar) so our first task upon entering Macau was finding an ATM. ... Given the high cost of accommodations in Macau, we decided to cash in some of our Best Western travel cards. ...

Macau wasn't really that, exactly, but it sure was fun and the perfect break from everything China. ... Funnily enough, the Macau Sands had a miniscule version of the Potala Palace. ... Macau wasn't all glitz and casinos though, we had Bacalhau and used most of the day wondering around the old colonial part of town (another world entirely. ...
