Aug 21, 2010 - Hong Kong/Helsinki/London/Leicester

We were 40 minutes late leaving Hong Kong and twenty minutes late arriving in Helsinki. ... Thanks must go first to the Chan family in Hong Kong for helping in the planning, the smooth running and the advice for the trip. ... As well as for organising things for us in Hong Kong, showing us around, the Oyster cards and phone, you made the trip so much easier. ... Thank you too, to Geoff Chau and his family who gave us a taste of Hong Kong, Geoff did a great job of taking us around for the day and feeding us sticky tofu and well as giving up his one day off on a Saturday to give us a real nice time. ... Thanks to his mum, dad and Joe for showing us a Hong Kong breakfast out another memorable experience. ...

Aug 20, 2010 - Hong Kong

That is one of the things about Hong Kong hotel rooms are so small, because land is at such a premium. ... Another strange thing about Hong Kong we noticed last night, was that despite it being the cleanest and most sterile country we have visited, even in the nicest restaurants the punters wash all the utensils before they use them and the staff bring out bowls to put the water in to do this. ... We then got the tube to Admiralty station, in order to get the Peak Tram, that as its name suggests takes you to the peak, which is a large hill behind Hong Kong which affords great views (therefore photo opportunities) of the place. ... Wandered around the busy streets of central Hong Kong as we had to wait until 6pm to meet the effervescent Mr Chan (Derrick's father) at our hotel. ... The problem with Hong Kong is that there are no pubs on every corner like the UK, where you can just sit with a nice cold drink on a hot day and let an hour drift by. ...

Aug 19, 2010 - Hong Kong

Well a better nights sleep last night, think I was so tired I would have slept anywhere. What a breakfast it turned out to be, my first every dim sum breakfast, with so many dishes to try including octopus and pigs intestine, as well as many shrimp ones, spring rolls and cake, this really was an awesome breakfast and we cant thank Geoff and his parents enough for giving us, in this case literally, a taste of the real Hong Kong. ... The problem with going for a quick drink in Hong Kong, seems to me, that unlike anywhere else in the world there is only one area to go, you cant just come out of the restaurant turn the corner and go in the pub, you have to get on the Metro and travel 30 minutes (in the opposite direction to our hotel) to get to the part of town that has bars. ... So the drinking session turned out to be one bottle of beer drunk rather quickly as I had, had a couple of phone calls from one of the boarders who had got his results earlier and now needed more details in order to try and get in to university and I had to email him asap.Well a better nights sleep last night, think I was so tired I would have slept anywhere. Aug 18, 2010 - Hanoi To Hong Kong

After getting to Kowlon station in Hong Kong and getting off of the train, I got pulled over, not by immigration (although I have been questioned quite a few times on the trip as my passport photo looks far to fat to be me), nor by customs, but by the health police, who scan you as you walk past, then pull over random people to take their temperature. ... When we got back to the hotel word must have gotten around that we were back in Hong Kong as the phone kept ringing, which is strange after nobody calling you for 5 weeks. ... After Geoff we got a call from Mr Chan (Derricks father) to welcome us back to Hong Kong and to arrange to meet for dinner on Friday. ...

Jul 28, 2010 - A soggy day touring

Hi all It is now the end of day three in Hong Kong. ... Did I also mention that it’s wet and humid here? We were doing a tour of Hong Kong Island today which was brought up short with a black storm warning, a landslide warning and a flash flood warning. ... Luckily those prayers worked on the way down and the cloud lifted long enough at the half way point for us to stop and get those desired snaps of Hong Kong city and harbour. ... Our guide Ross said it best “here in Hong Kong there is the rich, the super rich and the very poor” and never was it demonstrated so accurately as in Aberdeen harbour. ... On the way back to the hotel we tried to get into the Hong Kong Space Museum, but it doesn’t open on Tuesdays, so as hard as it was we went shopping yet again and then washed it all down with a Guinness and ginger ale. ...
